Andella: A Delicate Handwritten Font That Elevates Brand Identity

I recently opened a new brand board for a local artisanal tea shop. The brief was simple: create a visual identity that feels warm, inviting, and a little whimsical. I knew from the start that typography would play a big role. That’s when I remembered Andella—a delicate, elegant handwritten font I’d seen in a design roundup but never had the chance to test in a real project.

First Impressions: A Font That Feels Alive

The moment I typed the shop’s name into the logo mockup using Andella, something clicked. It wasn’t just legible—it felt like it had a pulse. The soft curves, flowing baseline, and subtle variation in stroke weight gave the impression of handwriting that was both personal and polished. It’s the kind of font that adds a human touch without sacrificing professionalism.

Andella is a script font that sits comfortably in the space between casual and refined. It’s not overly decorative like some script fonts can be, which makes it versatile for a variety of brand applications. Whether it’s on a business card, product label, or a digital post, Andella maintains a consistent tone—elegant, approachable, and a little nostalgic.

Testing in Real Design Contexts

I started by using Andella as the main logo type. The client wanted something that felt organic and personal, and the font’s natural flow complemented the hand-drawn illustrations we were incorporating. Because Andella is PUA encoded, I could access alternate characters and ligatures without any technical hurdles, which helped in crafting a logo that didn’t feel repetitive or mass-produced.

Next, I applied it to packaging mockups—tea boxes, label stickers, and even small swing tags. In each case, the font retained its charm. It was delicate enough to work on small label prints and still held up on larger format signage like window decals and wall menus. The balance in character spacing ensured it never felt cramped or hard to read at a glance.

Where Andella Shines

As a brand designer, I often look for fonts that can carry a tone without overpowering the visuals. Andella works best as a display font or headline typeface. It’s not ideal for long-form body copy—its script nature makes it better suited for short-form text like brand names, taglines, headings, and accents.

One of the standout features of Andella is how it maintains visual harmony across both digital and print formats. I used it on the homepage hero section of the client’s website, and it looked just as good as it did on printed menus and thank-you cards. This kind of consistency is essential for building brand recognition and trust.

Pairing With Other Fonts

Since Andella is a script font with a flowing, handwritten style, I paired it with a clean sans serif for body text—something like Montserrat or Lato. This contrast helped establish a clear visual hierarchy while keeping the overall identity modern and fresh. If I wanted a more classic feel, I might have gone with a serif font like Playfair Display, but the client leaned toward a minimalist yet warm aesthetic.

Andella also pairs beautifully with other script fonts if you’re going for a layered, editorial-style layout. But in branding work, I tend to keep things more restrained—using Andella as the hero and a simpler font as the supporting typeface.

Practical Design Tips for Using Andella

Before diving into full brand asset creation, I always test a font in multiple contexts. Here’s how I approached it with Andella:

  1. Check the character set: Make sure you have all the necessary glyphs, especially if the brand name includes special characters or accents.
  2. Test different weights: Andella may not come in multiple weights, so I made sure to adjust letter spacing and color contrast to create visual depth where needed.
  3. See how it scales: From a 48pt headline to a 10pt label, I tested the font in various sizes to ensure legibility and charm across formats.
  4. Review licensing: Since this was a commercial project, I double-checked that Andella was licensed for use in brand assets, merchandise, and marketing materials.

One thing I appreciated was how Andella’s PUA encoding made it easy to use alternate characters in design software like Adobe Illustrator and Figma. This added a level of customization that helped the brand feel more bespoke and less templated.

Final Thoughts: A Font Worth Adding to Your Toolkit

Working with Andella reminded me how much the right font can elevate a brand’s personality. It’s not just about aesthetics—it’s about creating a voice for the business. Andella gave the tea shop’s brand a voice that felt genuine, warm, and memorable.

If you’re a designer working on a branding project that calls for a touch of elegance and humanity, Andella is worth exploring. Whether it’s for a logo, packaging, or web headers, it brings a level of craftsmanship that’s hard to replicate with more generic script fonts.

It’s also a great example of how a premium font can make a real difference in client work. From the first mockup to the final brand guidelines, Andella proved to be a reliable and expressive typeface that brought both function and soul to the design.
